By Pst. Williams ChurchillMarch 7, 2025

In Orthodox Christian tradition, prayers for the dead hold deep spiritual significance, reflecting faith in eternal life and the mercy of God.

These prayers, rooted in scripture, seek to comfort grieving hearts while interceding for the souls of loved ones who have passed on. They offer hope, peace, and a connection between the living and the departed.

This post serves as guide for honoring memories, deepening spiritual devotion, and expressing trust in God’s loving embrace beyond this earthly life.

30 Orthodox Prayers for the Dead

    1. John 11:25-26

“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?’” (ESV)

O Lord of eternal life, you are our resurrection and our hope. We pray for the soul of our departed, that they may rest in Your peace and rise in Your glory on the last day.

Bring comfort to those who mourn, and remind us of Your promise of everlasting life.

    2. Psalm 23:4

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” (ESV)

Almighty God, walk with the soul of our departed one through the valley of death into eternal light. May they find comfort and rest in Your presence, and may their spirit be surrounded by Your love and grace forever.

    3. Romans 14:8

“For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s.” (ESV)

Lord, in life and in death, we belong to You. We entrust the soul of our departed one to your care, knowing they are held in Your eternal embrace.

May they find joy in Your heavenly kingdom, where sorrow and pain are no more.

    4. Revelation 21:4

“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” (ESV)

Merciful Father, grant our departed one a place where tears are no more, and suffering is wiped away. May they rest in the beauty of Your kingdom and find eternal peace in Your love and light.

    5. Philippians 3:20-21

“But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.” (ESV)

Lord Jesus, transform the soul of our departed one and welcome them into the heavenly kingdom. May their spirit be renewed in Your glory, and may they experience the fullness of joy in Your eternal presence.

    6. Matthew 5:4

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” (ESV)

Loving God, bless those who grieve the loss of our departed one, and comfort their hearts with Your eternal promises. May they find peace knowing that they rest in Your unending care and love.

    7. 1 Thessalonians 4:14

“For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.” (ESV)

Heavenly Father, as You raised Your Son, Jesus Christ, from the dead, bring the soul of our departed one into Your eternal rest. May they sleep in peace, awaiting the day of resurrection and rejoicing.

    8. Isaiah 25:8

“He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken.” (ESV)

Almighty God, we trust in Your promise to defeat death and bring us into eternal life. May our departed one rest in peace, free from the sorrows of this world, and live forever in Your loving presence.

    9. Ecclesiastes 12:7

“And the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.” (ESV)

Creator of life, you formed us from the dust of the earth and breathed into us the breath of life. Receive the spirit of our departed one, and may they find their eternal home in You, the source of all creation.

    10. 2 Corinthians 5:8

    13. 1 Corinthians 15:42-44

“So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable. It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body.” (ESV)

God of glory, raise our departed one in the power of Your resurrection. Transform their soul into the imperishable and glorious life You have promised to all who believe in You.

    14. Psalm 116:15

Lord, we know that the passing of our departed one is precious in Your sight. Receive them into Your heavenly kingdom and grant them a place among the saints in everlasting joy.

    15. Daniel 12:3

Loving Lord, we find peace knowing that nothing—not even death—can separate our departed one from Your love. Let their soul rest in Your eternal embrace and Your boundless grace.

    17. Isaiah 57:1-2

    20. 2 Timothy 4:7-8

    26. Revelation 14:13
