30 A Prayer for Guidance With Scriptures to Back

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go,” God promises in the Psalms, “I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.” Not a distant answer given once and left to interpretation, ongoing instruction from Someone actually watching closely.

These thirty verses are for the decision you’re not sure how to make, the direction you can’t quite see yet.

Pray these and then wait, actually expecting to be shown something.

A Prayer for Guidance

1. Psalms 32:8 (KJV)

“I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.”

Prayer: You promise to instruct and teach me, to counsel me with Your loving eye on me. Do that now.

Let guidance come one clear step at a time.

2. Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV)

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

Prayer: Let me trust You with all my heart, not leaning on my own limited understanding.

Let trust replace the second-guessing that usually slows me down.

3. James 1:5 (KJV)

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”

Prayer: I lack wisdom here, plainly. Give it to me generously, without finding fault.

Let wisdom come without shame for having to ask for it.

4. Psalms 25:4-5 (KJV)

“Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths. Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.”

Prayer: Show me Your ways, Lord, teach me Your paths, guide me in Your truth.

Let teaching happen even when I feel like I should already know this.

5. Psalms 119:105 (KJV)

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

Prayer: Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

Let one lit step be enough, even without seeing the whole road.

6. Isaiah 30:21 (KJV)

“And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.”

Prayer: Let me hear that voice behind me saying, this is the way, whenever I start drifting off it.

Let Your correction come clearly, before I’ve gone too far the wrong way.

7. Psalms 143:8 (KJV)

“Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee.”

Prayer: Show me the way I should go, for to You I entrust my life.

Let this trust cover the whole decision, not just the parts I understand.

8. Proverbs 16:9 (KJV)

“A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.”

Prayer: I can make my plans, but You establish my steps. Override my plans wherever they need overriding.

Let Your direction win over my own planning when they don’t line up.

9. Psalms 37:23 (KJV)

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.”

Prayer: My steps are established by You when I delight in Your way.

Let delight in You come before I ask for direction.

10. John 16:13 (KJV)

“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.”

Prayer: Let Your Spirit of truth guide me into all truth, not just partial clarity.

Let this guidance be trustworthy enough to actually act on.

11. Proverbs 4:11-12 (KJV)

“I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths. When thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened; and when thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble.”

Prayer: Lead me in the way of wisdom, so when I walk, my step won’t be hampered.

Let confidence in the path come from knowing You’ve already walked it.

12. Isaiah 42:16 (KJV)

“And I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them.”

Prayer: Lead me by a way I don’t know, along unfamiliar paths, and turn darkness into light.

Let unfamiliar not mean unguided.

13. Psalms 48:14 (KJV)

“For this God is our God for ever and ever: he will be our guide even unto death.”

Prayer: You are my God forever and ever, and You will be my guide even to the end.

Let this guidance not run out before this journey does.

14. Exodus 15:13 (KJV)

“Thou in thy mercy hast led forth the people which thou hast redeemed: thou hast guided them in thy strength unto thy holy habitation.”

Prayer: Guide me in Your strength to where You want me to be.

Let Your strength carry this guidance, not just my own effort.

15. Psalms 73:24 (KJV)

“Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.”

Prayer: You guide me with Your counsel, and afterward receive me into glory.

Let today’s guidance be part of a much longer story.

16. Proverbs 20:24 (KJV)

“Man’s goings are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?”

Prayer: A person’s steps are directed by You. How then can I understand my own way without You?

Let me stop pretending I can figure this out alone.

17. Psalms 27:11 (KJV)

“Teach me thy way, O LORD, and lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies.”

Prayer: Teach me Your way, and lead me in a straight path.

Let the path be level, not one more obstacle among many.

18. Isaiah 58:11 (KJV)

“And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.”

Prayer: Guide me continually, satisfy me even in the dry places.

Let guidance be constant, not just occasional.

19. Nehemiah 9:12 (KJV)

“Moreover thou leddest them in the day by a cloudy pillar; and in the night by a pillar of fire, to give them light in the way wherein they should go.”

Prayer: Let a pillar of cloud lead me by day, the way You led Israel through the wilderness.

Let Your leading be as visible and constant as it was for them.

20. Psalms 5:8 (KJV)

“Lead me, O LORD, in thy righteousness because of mine enemies; make thy way straight before my face.”

Prayer: Lead me in Your righteousness, and make Your way straight before me.

Let righteousness, not just convenience, shape the path forward.

21. Genesis 24:27 (KJV)

“And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of my master Abraham, who hath not left destitute my master of his mercy and his truth: I being in the way, the LORD led me to the house of my master’s brethren.”

Prayer: Let You lead me on this journey the way You led Abraham’s servant, right to where I need to be.

Let this leading be as specific and successful as it was for him.

22. Proverbs 11:14 (KJV)

“Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.”

Prayer: For lack of guidance a nation falls, but many advisers make victory sure. Let me not go it alone.

Let wise counsel from others be part of how You guide me too.

23. Colossians 1:9-10 (KJV)

“For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;”

Prayer: Fill me with knowledge of Your will, so I can live a life worthy of You.

Let clarity about Your will steady this next step.

24. Romans 8:14 (KJV)

“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”

Prayer: Let me be led by Your Spirit, the way Your children are meant to be.

Let this leading be as real to me as it is for everyone else who follows You.

25. Psalms 139:9-10 (KJV)

“If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.”

Prayer: If I settle on the far side of the sea, even there Your hand will guide me.

Let no distance be too far for Your guidance to reach.

26. Jeremiah 6:16 (KJV)

“Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.”

Prayer: Let me stand at the crossroads and ask for the ancient paths, the good way, and walk in it.

Let old, tested wisdom guide this new decision.

27. Psalms 23:3 (KJV)

“He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”

Prayer: You lead me in paths of righteousness for Your name’s sake, not just for my own comfort.

Let the path You choose matter more to me than the easiest one.

28. Deuteronomy 32:10-12 (KJV)

“He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness; he led him about, he instructed him, he kept him as the apple of his eye. As an eagle stirreth up her nest, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them, beareth them on her wings: So the LORD alone did lead him, and there was no strange god with him.”

Prayer: You guarded and guided, the way an eagle watches over its young.

Let this same close, careful guidance be true for me now.

29. Proverbs 2:6-9 (KJV)

“For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly. He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints. Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path.”

Prayer: You give wisdom, and You guard the paths of the just, watching over the way of Your faithful ones.

Let me trust I’m being watched over even in this uncertain decision.

30. Habakkuk 2:1 (KJV)

“I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved.”

Prayer: Let me stand at my watch and station myself to see what You will say.

Let me actually wait and watch, not just ask and move on too quickly.

Conclusion

That promise in the Psalms wasn’t a distant, one-time answer. It described ongoing instruction, a loving eye actually watching, not a hands-off answer left to be figured out alone.

Ask, then actually wait for the answer instead of moving forward on your own guess.

For the specific weight of a decision, a prayer for discernment in making a decision and a prayer for answers pair well with this one.
