30 Prayer for Healing Before Surgery With Scriptures to Back

James wrote plainly to the early church: if anyone is sick, call the elders, pray over them, and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. Prayer before treatment was never treated as a substitute for medicine in Scripture, it was simply assumed to happen alongside it.

These thirty verses are for the hours before a procedure, the pre-op wait, the consent forms, the countdown to the anesthesia.

Pray these on the way to the hospital, and let someone you trust pray the ones you can’t get through once you’re already in the gown.

Prayer for Healing Before Surgery

1. Jeremiah 17:14 (KJV)

“Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise.”

Prayer: Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved, for You are my praise.

Let healing come from You, not just from the skill in the room.

2. Exodus 15:26 (KJV)

“And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.”

Prayer: You are the Lord who heals. Be that name over me on this operating table today.

Let this be more than a title I’ve heard, let it be true for me specifically.

3. Psalms 41:3 (KJV)

“The LORD will strengthen him upon the bed of languishing: thou wilt make all his bed in his sickness.”

Prayer: Lord, sustain me on this bed, and restore me from this sickness afterward.

Let sustaining cover every hour I’m under, even the ones I won’t remember.

4. Psalms 103:2-3 (KJV)

“Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;”

Prayer: Father, forgive what needs forgiving and heal what needs healing, don’t let me forget either benefit today.

Let gratitude steady me as much as the anesthesia does.

5. Isaiah 41:10 (KJV)

“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”

Prayer: Lord, don’t let me be afraid, You are with me even once I can’t feel the room anymore.

Let Your presence outlast my consciousness of it.

6. Psalms 23:4 (KJV)

“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.”

Prayer: Even walking through this valley, I fear no evil, for You are with me.

Let Your rod and staff comfort me right up until I go under.

7. Philippians 4:6-7 (KJV)

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

Prayer: Father, I bring this specific anxiety to You instead of carrying it into the operating room.

Let peace that doesn’t make logical sense guard my heart right now.

8. Philippians 4:13 (KJV)

“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”

Prayer: Lord, I can get through this through Christ who strengthens me, including the parts I’m dreading most.

Let strength cover what I have no control over today.

9. 2 Timothy 1:7 (KJV)

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

Prayer: You have not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. Hold my mind steady before they wheel me in.

Let a sound mind override the fear trying to take over right now.

10. Psalms 34:17-18 (KJV)

“The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles. The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”

Prayer: Lord, I’m crying out, hear me, and be close to my broken, nervous heart today.

Let closeness be real to me even under sedation.

11. James 5:14-15 (KJV)

“Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.”

Prayer: Father, let this prayer offered in faith raise me up, the way Your word promises.

Let faith, not just medicine, be part of what heals me.

12. Matthew 9:21-22 (KJV)

“For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole. But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.”

Prayer: Lord, like the woman who only needed to touch Your garment, let one reach toward You today be enough.

Let faith this small still be faith enough for what I need.

13. Mark 5:34 (KJV)

“And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.”

Prayer: Lord, say over me what You said to her: my faith has made me well, go in peace.

Let peace be the last thing I feel before I go under, not fear.

14. Isaiah 53:5 (KJV)

“But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.”

Prayer: By Your wounds I am healed. Let that ancient healing reach this very current, very physical need.

Let this verse be more than history, let it be happening again today.

15. Psalms 91:1-2 (KJV)

“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.”

Prayer: Let me dwell in Your shelter today, my refuge and fortress, the God in whom I trust.

Let the operating room somehow still count as shelter, because You’re in it.

16. Psalms 91:11 (KJV)

“For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.”

Prayer: Command Your angels concerning me, to guard me in every part of this procedure.

Let their guarding cover the surgeon’s hands too.

17. Psalms 121:1-2 (KJV)

“I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.”

Prayer: My help comes from You, Maker of heaven and earth, not from the ceiling tiles I’m staring at.

Let my eyes find You even flat on my back under bright lights.

18. Psalms 121:7-8 (KJV)

“The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.”

Prayer: Keep me from all harm today, watch over my going in and my coming out of anesthesia.

Let watching cover every step of this, start to finish.

19. Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV)

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

Prayer: Lord, I trust You with all my heart today, not leaning on my own understanding of what could go wrong.

Let trust replace the research I’ve already overdone.

20. Isaiah 26:3 (KJV)

“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.”

Prayer: Keep me in perfect peace, because my mind is fixed on You right now instead of on the risks.

Let my mind stay fixed there even as the sedation takes hold.

21. John 14:27 (KJV)

“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

Prayer: Lord, give me the peace You give, not the kind the world offers. Let my heart not be troubled or afraid today.

Let this be a peace that actually holds under real fear.

22. 3 John 1:2 (KJV)

“Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.”

Prayer: Father, You wish above all things that I would prosper and be in health. Let this surgery be part of that.

Let this old prayer for a friend become a prayer for me today.

23. Psalms 27:1 (KJV)

“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”

Prayer: The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear, not even this.

Let fear lose its grip the moment I remember who You are.

24. Psalms 46:1 (KJV)

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

Prayer: You are my refuge and strength, a very present help in this specific kind of trouble.

Let help feel present, not distant, in the next few hours.

25. Romans 8:28 (KJV)

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

Prayer: Work this surgery together for good, whatever the outcome turns out to be.

Let me trust this even before I know how it goes.

26. Romans 8:38-39 (KJV)

“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Prayer: Nothing, not this surgery, not the recovery, can separate me from Your love.

Let that certainty hold steady no matter what today brings.

27. Hebrews 4:16 (KJV)

“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”

Prayer: Lord, let me approach Your throne with confidence today, and receive the mercy I need right now.

Let confidence replace the dread I walked in with.

28. 1 Peter 5:7 (KJV)

“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”

Prayer: I’m casting this whole anxiety onto You, because You care about what happens to me today.

Let casting it be real, not just something I say in the pre-op room.

29. Psalms 121:3 (KJV)

“He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.”

Prayer: You will not let my foot slip, You who watch over me will not slumber, not even during this procedure.

Let steady hands, mine and the surgeon’s, be part of how You answer this.

30. Numbers 6:24-26 (KJV)

“The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.”

Prayer: Lord, bless me and keep me, make Your face shine on me, and give me peace today.

Let this old blessing be spoken over this operating room specifically.

Conclusion

No verse here promises the surgery goes exactly as planned. What they promise is Who’s in the room whether or not you’re conscious of it, and Who’s still there when you wake up groggy in recovery.

Bring these with you into the pre-op room, and let them carry you past whatever you can’t control today.

For the loved ones sitting in the waiting room while you’re in there, a prayer for a friend with a sick child and a prayer for a mother with a sick child are worth reading too, either now or once you’re through it.
