The disciples didn’t ask Jesus to teach them to preach, or to heal, or to perform miracles. Watching Him pray, they asked for one thing specifically: “Lord, teach us to pray.” What He gave them in response became the most repeated prayer in history, and still holds up as a working outline for anyone today.
These thirty verses walk through that prayer phrase by phrase, pairing each line with Scripture that fills it out further.
Pray it slowly today, phrase by phrase, instead of rushing through it out of habit.
The Lord’s Prayer for Today
1. Matthew 6:9 (KJV)
“After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.”
Prayer: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name, over this whole day, not just this one prayer.
Let calling You Father today feel like relationship, not just a formal title.
2. Romans 8:15 (KJV)
“For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.”
Prayer: You gave me the Spirit of adoption, by whom I cry, Abba, Father. Let that closeness be real today.
Let sonship, not fear, define how I approach You right now.
3. 1 John 3:1 (KJV)
“Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.”
Prayer: See what great love You have lavished on me, that I should be called Your child. Let that truth sink in today.
Let being Your child shape how I carry myself in every part of today.
4. Psalms 103:13 (KJV)
“Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him.”
Prayer: As a father has compassion on his children, You have compassion on me. Let me feel that today, not just believe it.
Let compassion be the lens I see this whole day through.
5. Isaiah 6:3 (KJV)
“And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.”
Prayer: Holy, holy, holy. Let Your holiness actually mean something to me today, not just be a word I skip past.
Let reverence shape how I speak to You today.
6. Leviticus 20:26 (KJV)
“And ye shall be holy unto me: for I the LORD am holy, and have severed you from other people, that ye should be mine.”
Prayer: Be holy, for You are holy, and You’ve set me apart to be Yours. Let that set-apartness show today.
Let today look noticeably different because I belong to You.
7. Matthew 6:10 (KJV)
“Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.”
Prayer: Your kingdom come, right here, right now, in the middle of my ordinary Tuesday.
Let Your kingdom show up in something specific today, not just someday.
8. Matthew 6:33 (KJV)
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
Prayer: Let me seek Your kingdom first today, and trust everything else to follow after.
Let priority actually show up in how I spend the next few hours.
9. Luke 17:21 (KJV)
“Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.”
Prayer: Your kingdom is within me and among us. Let me live like that’s true today, not just believe it theoretically.
Let Your kingdom be visible in how I treat people today.
10. Matthew 6:10 (KJV)
“Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.”
Prayer: Your will be done on earth, in my life specifically, as it already is in heaven.
Let Your will today take priority over my own preferences.
11. Luke 22:42 (KJV)
“Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.”
Prayer: Not my will, but Yours be done, the same surrender You modeled the night before the cross.
Let surrender today be real, not just something I say when it’s easy.
12. Romans 12:2 (KJV)
“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
Prayer: Transform me by renewing my mind, so I can test and approve what Your will actually is today.
Let transformation happen in something concrete today, not just in theory.
13. Matthew 6:11 (KJV)
“Give us this day our daily bread.”
Prayer: Give me today my daily bread, exactly what I need for today, not necessarily more.
Let me trust You for today without demanding tomorrow’s provision in advance.
14. Philippians 4:19 (KJV)
“But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”
Prayer: You will supply all my needs according to Your riches, not according to what I currently have saved up.
Let trust in Your supply outweigh my own worry about running short.
15. Exodus 16:4 (KJV)
“Then said the LORD unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no.”
Prayer: Rain down what I need today, the way You did for Israel in the wilderness, one day’s portion at a time.
Let me gather what today needs without hoarding out of fear about tomorrow.
16. Matthew 6:12 (KJV)
“And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.”
Prayer: Forgive me my debts, as I forgive my debtors. Let both halves of that be true today.
Let me actually extend the forgiveness I’m asking to receive today.
17. Ephesians 4:32 (KJV)
“And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.”
Prayer: Let me be kind and compassionate, forgiving others the way You forgave me.
Let forgiveness today be as generous as the forgiveness I’ve already received.
18. Colossians 3:13 (KJV)
“Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.”
Prayer: Let me bear with whoever wrongs me today, and forgive as You forgave me.
Let grievances today not outlast the day itself.
19. Matthew 6:14-15 (KJV)
“For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”
Prayer: If I forgive others their sins, You will forgive mine. Let me not hold that door shut against myself today.
Let unforgiveness not be the thing that blocks my own peace today.
20. Matthew 6:13 (KJV)
“And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.”
Prayer: Lead me not into temptation today, and keep me clear of what I already know I’m weak toward.
Let me notice temptation early, before it gets close enough to matter.
21. 1 Corinthians 10:13 (KJV)
“There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”
Prayer: No temptation today will be more than I can bear, You’ll provide a way out. Let me actually take it.
Let me see the way out today instead of talking myself past it.
22. James 1:13 (KJV)
“Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:”
Prayer: You don’t tempt anyone. Let me remember that when I’m tempted to blame You for what I’m actually choosing.
Let me take responsibility for my own choices today, not deflect them onto You.
23. Matthew 6:13 (KJV)
“And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.”
Prayer: Deliver me from evil today, whatever form it takes, obvious or subtle.
Let deliverance reach the specific evil I’m most likely to face today.
24. 2 Thessalonians 3:3 (KJV)
“But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil.”
Prayer: You are faithful, and You will strengthen and protect me from the evil one today.
Let protection be constant, not something I only remember to ask for once.
25. Psalms 121:7 (KJV)
“The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.”
Prayer: Keep me from all harm today, watch over my whole life, not just the big moments.
Let watching cover even the ordinary, forgettable parts of today.
26. Matthew 6:13 (KJV)
“And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.”
Prayer: Yours is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever. Let today end with that as true as it was when it started.
Let this doxology be my honest conclusion, not just a memorized closing line.
27. Revelation 5:13 (KJV)
“And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.”
Prayer: To You who sits on the throne be praise, honor, glory, and power, from me too, today.
Let praise be part of how I close out today, not just how I opened it.
28. 1 Chronicles 29:11 (KJV)
“Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all.”
Prayer: Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory, everything in heaven and earth is Yours.
Let ownership of today, all of it, genuinely belong to You.
29. Luke 11:1 (KJV)
“And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.”
Prayer: Teach me to pray, the way You taught the disciples, so this doesn’t become empty repetition.
Let this prayer stay alive to me, not wear down into habit.
30. Philippians 4:6 (KJV)
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”
Prayer: By prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, let me bring today’s requests to You, the way this whole prayer has just modeled.
Let thanksgiving stay woven through every request I make today.
Conclusion
The disciples had watched real teachers pray their whole lives. Something about the way Jesus prayed made them ask anyway. Maybe it’s worth asking that same question again today, even after years of saying this prayer by memory.
Let today actually follow the shape of what you just prayed.
