“Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations,” the psalmist wrote, “before the mountains were born.” A memorial service opens with that same wide view, one life set against something far larger, before turning to the specific details of who this person actually was.
These thirty verses are for opening a memorial service well, honoring a specific life while gathering everyone present around something bigger than the loss itself. For the funeral service surrounding it, a prayer for funeral covers that too.
Read a few of these aloud at the very start, before sharing memories or eulogies begin.
Opening Prayer for Memorial Service
1. Psalms 90:1-2 (KJV)
“Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.”

Let this bigger picture hold us steady as we gather today.
2. Psalms 90:12 (KJV)

Let this service teach us something we won’t forget.
3. Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 (KJV)
“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;”
Prayer: There is a time to be born and a time to die. Let us trust this season, even now.
Let us honor this life fully in the time we have today.
4. Psalms 116:15 (KJV)

“By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.”
Prayer: Though they are gone, let their faith still speak through what we remember today.
Let their life continue to teach us, even now.
9. Psalms 71:17-18 (KJV)

Prayer: Let us declare Your marvelous deeds, seen through this whole life, even into its final years.
Let this life’s testimony be told fully today.
10. 2 Timothy 4:7 (KJV)

Let hope be as present here as grief is.
15. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 (KJV)
“But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.”
Prayer: Let us not grieve like those with no hope, even while grieving honestly today.
Let hope and grief hold together in this room, not cancel each other out.
16. Revelation 14:13 (KJV)
“And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.”
Prayer: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord, let them rest from their labors now.
Let rest be complete after however hard the road was.
17. Psalms 23:6 (KJV)

19. Isaiah 57:1-2 (KJV)

Let rest be real and complete for them now.

Let this life’s whole meaning be honored accurately today.

Let this reward be what we’re actually celebrating today.
23. Psalms 145:3-7 (KJV)
“Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable. One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts. They shall abundantly utter the memory of thy great goodness, and shall sing of thy righteousness.”
Prayer: Let one generation tell the next of Your mighty acts, seen through this life.
Let this life’s story be passed down, not lost.
24. Luke 12:48 (KJV)

Prayer: To whom much was given, much was required. Let their faithfulness with what they were given be honored today.
Let us measure this life rightly, by what was actually entrusted to them.
25. 1 Corinthians 15:57-58 (KJV)

Let this be true of the life we’re gathered to remember.
29. 2 Corinthians 5:1 (KJV)
“For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.”

Let this eternal home be more real than what we’re marking here today.
30. Psalms 133:1 (KJV)
“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!”
Prayer: How good and pleasant it is when we gather together in unity to remember this life.
Let this gathering itself be a gift, not just an obligation.
Conclusion
The psalmist opened with something enormous, God as dwelling place before mountains existed, before narrowing all the way down to a single life numbered in days. A memorial service does something similar, holding the vastness of eternity and the specific, irreplaceable details of one person’s life in the same breath.
Let this service move at its own pace, without rushing anyone toward feeling finished with their grief.
For the burial itself, whether it happens before or after this service, a prayer for graveside service is worth reading too.
