30 Prayer for Forgiveness and Mercy With Scriptures to Back

Jesus told a story about two men praying in the temple. The religious one listed his own good deeds. The other stood at a distance, wouldn’t even look up, and said only, “God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” Jesus said that second man went home justified, not the first.

These thirty verses are for that same short, honest prayer, no résumé of good behavior attached, just an honest request for mercy.

Pray these without defending yourself first. That’s not what this prayer is for.

Prayer for Forgiveness and Mercy

1. Luke 18:13 (KJV)

“And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.”

Prayer: God, have mercy on me, a sinner. Let this be enough, the way it was for him.

Let me not add excuses to what’s already a complete prayer.

2. Psalms 51:1 (KJV)

“Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.”

Prayer: Have mercy on me, God, according to Your unfailing love, according to Your great compassion.

Let mercy come from Your character, not from how well I’ve behaved.

3. 1 John 1:9 (KJV)

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Prayer: I confess this to You, trusting You are faithful and just to forgive and purify me completely.

Let confession lead to real freedom, not lingering shame.

4. Psalms 103:8-12 (KJV)

“The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever. He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.”

Prayer: You are compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, removing my sins as far as the east is from the west.

Let this distance be real, not something I keep dragging back.

5. Micah 7:18-19 (KJV)

“Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy. He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.”

Prayer: Who is a God like You, who pardons sin and delights to show mercy? Let that delight be true toward me today.

Let me trust You actually delight in forgiving me, not just tolerate it.

6. Isaiah 1:18 (KJV)

“Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.”

Prayer: Though my sins are like scarlet, let them be white as snow.

Let this exchange be complete, not just partial.

7. Ephesians 1:7 (KJV)

“In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;”

Prayer: In You I have redemption through Your blood, forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of Your grace.

Let grace here feel as rich as this verse describes.

8. Ephesians 2:4-5 (KJV)

“But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)”

Prayer: You are rich in mercy, because of Your great love You made me alive even when I was dead in sin.

Let this mercy be as generous as this verse describes.

9. Titus 3:5 (KJV)

“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;”

Prayer: You saved me not because of righteous things I had done, but because of Your mercy.

Let me stop trying to earn what was always a gift.

10. Hebrews 4:16 (KJV)

“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”

Prayer: Let me approach Your throne of grace with confidence, and receive mercy and find grace to help in my time of need.

Let confidence come from Your invitation, not my own worthiness.

11. Lamentations 3:22-23 (KJV)

“It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”

Prayer: Your mercies are new every morning, great is Your faithfulness, even after yesterday’s failures.

Let today’s mercy be enough for today’s need.

12. Psalms 86:5 (KJV)

“For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.”

Prayer: You are good and forgiving, abounding in love to all who call on You, including me.

Let forgiveness already be standing ready before I even finish asking.

13. Daniel 9:9 (KJV)

“To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses, though we have rebelled against him;”

Prayer: You are merciful and forgiving, even though I have rebelled against You.

Let rebellion not disqualify me from the mercy You keep offering.

14. Nehemiah 9:17 (KJV)

“And refused to obey, neither were mindful of thy wonders that thou didst among them; but hardened their necks, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage: but thou art a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and forsookest them not.”

Prayer: You are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love.

Let this whole description be what I actually experience today.

15. Joel 2:13 (KJV)

“And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.”

Prayer: Let me return to You, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love.

Let returning to You be simple, not complicated by shame.

16. Romans 3:23-24 (KJV)

“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:”

Prayer: I have sinned and fallen short, but I’m justified freely by Your grace through the redemption in Christ.

Let freely mean freely, not something I need to work off.

17. Romans 5:8 (KJV)

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

Prayer: While I was still a sinner, Christ died for me. Let that timing settle any doubt about whether I’m worth forgiving.

Let this truth answer the question before I even finish asking it.

18. Colossians 1:13-14 (KJV)

“Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:”

Prayer: You rescued me and brought me into Your kingdom, in whom I have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Let this rescue feel as real today as it was the day it happened.

19. Psalms 32:1-2 (KJV)

“Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile.”

Prayer: Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.

Let me actually feel blessed by this, not just informed of it.

20. Psalms 130:3-4 (KJV)

“If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand? But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.”

Prayer: If You kept a record of sins, who could stand? But with You there is forgiveness, so that You are feared.

Let reverence for You grow from this forgiveness, not fear of punishment.

21. Matthew 6:14-15 (KJV)

“For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”

Prayer: Let me forgive others the way I want to be forgiven, so I don’t block my own peace.

Let me extend what I’m asking to receive.

22. Luke 6:36 (KJV)

“Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.”

Prayer: Let me be merciful, just as You, my Father, are merciful.

Let mercy I’ve received become mercy I actually give.

23. James 2:13 (KJV)

“For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.”

Prayer: Let mercy triumph over judgment, in how You treat me and in how I treat others.

Let mercy win the argument every time it comes up.

24. 1 Timothy 1:15-16 (KJV)

“This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.”

Prayer: Christ Jesus came to save sinners, and I count myself among them, without pretending otherwise.

Let honesty about my need for mercy be the starting point, not the ending point.

25. Psalms 25:6-7 (KJV)

“Remember, O LORD, thy tender mercies and thy lovingkindnesses; for they have been ever of old. Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions: according to thy mercy remember thou me for thy goodness’ sake, O LORD.”

Prayer: Remember Your great mercy, but don’t remember the sins of my youth or my many rebellious ways.

Let mercy have the longer memory here, not my failures.

26. Isaiah 55:7 (KJV)

“Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.”

Prayer: Let me turn to You, and let You have mercy on me, and freely pardon.

Let turning back be simple, not a complicated process to earn back Your favor.

27. 2 Chronicles 7:14 (KJV)

“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

Prayer: Let me humble myself and pray and seek Your face, and turn from what needs turning from.

Let humility come easily, not as something I have to force.

28. Acts 3:19 (KJV)

“Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;”

Prayer: Let me repent and turn to You, so my sins may be wiped out completely.

Let wiped out mean gone, not just covered over.

29. Psalms 51:10 (KJV)

“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”

Prayer: Create in me a pure heart, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

Let renewal reach the root, not just the visible behavior.

30. Romans 8:1 (KJV)

“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”

Prayer: There is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. Let me actually live like that’s true.

Let freedom from condemnation reach the parts of me still trying to punish myself.

Conclusion

The tax collector didn’t stay in the temple explaining himself. He said the honest thing and went home justified. Sometimes the shortest prayer is also the most complete one.

Pray this one without adding a defense to it.

For the ongoing work of actually extending forgiveness to others, a prayer for forgiveness of others who hurt you pairs well with this one, and a prayer for forgiveness of sins, renewal, and repentance goes deeper into repentance specifically.
