Jesus told a story about a father who saw his son “while he was still a long way off” and ran to him before a single apology was spoken, no lecture waiting at the door, only welcome. That posture, watching the road, ready to run the moment there’s anything to run toward, is the model Scripture gives for a parent waiting on a wandering child.
These thirty verses are for that exact wait, not for fixing her from a distance, but for holding onto real hope while the road stays empty.
Pray these by name, especially on the nights the waiting feels hardest.
Prayer for My Daughter to Come Back Home
1. Luke 15:20 (KJV)
“And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.”
Prayer: Father, let me watch the road the way that father did, ready to run the moment there’s anything to run toward.
Let watching not turn into giving up while I wait.
2. Luke 15:22-24 (KJV)
“But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet: And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry: For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.”
Prayer: Lord, when she is ready to come home, let there be no lecture waiting at the door, only welcome.
Let me rehearse grace instead of rehearsing what I’ll say to her.
3. Luke 15:32 (KJV)
“It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.”
Prayer: Father, this daughter of mine was lost, let her be found again, was gone, let her come back alive to us.
Let the celebration already be planned in my heart before the day arrives.
4. Jeremiah 31:16-17 (KJV)
“Thus saith the LORD; Refrain thy voice from weeping, and thine eyes from tears: for thy work shall be rewarded, saith the LORD; and they shall come again from the land of the enemy. And there is hope in thine end, saith the LORD, that thy children shall come again to their own border.”
Prayer: Lord, You promise her children shall come back to their own territory. Let that promise cover my own child by name.
Let hope for her return be work I keep doing, not a feeling I keep waiting for.
5. Jeremiah 31:3 (KJV)
“The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.”
Prayer: Father, You have loved her with an everlasting love, a love that outlasts however far she’s gone.
Let Your love for her reach places mine currently cannot.
6. Isaiah 43:5-6 (KJV)
“Fear not: for I am with thee: I will bring thy seed from the east, and gather thee from the west; I will say to the north, Give up; and to the south, Keep not back: bring my sons from far, and my daughters from the ends of the earth;”
Prayer: Lord, You said You would bring children back from every direction. Bring mine back from wherever she has gone.
Let no distance be too far for Your reach to cover.
7. Isaiah 49:25 (KJV)
“But thus saith the LORD, Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered: for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children.”
Prayer: Father, You said You would contend with whatever contends against her and save my children Yourself.
Let me hand this fight to You instead of exhausting myself trying to win it alone.
8. Isaiah 54:13 (KJV)
“And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of thy children.”
Prayer: Lord, let her be taught by You, wherever she is right now, whether or not she can see You teaching her yet.
Let Your instruction reach her even in the places I no longer have access to.
9. Ezekiel 34:16 (KJV)
“I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away, and will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick: but I will destroy the fat and the strong; I will feed them with judgment.”
Prayer: Father, You said You Yourself would seek the lost and bring back the strayed. Do that for her now.
Let Your seeking go where my searching cannot follow.
10. Matthew 18:12-14 (KJV)
“How think ye? if a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone astray? And if so be that he find it, verily I say unto you, he rejoiceth more of that sheep, than of the ninety and nine which went not astray. Even so it is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish.”
Prayer: Lord, it is not Your will that even one be lost. Hold onto that will for her specifically tonight.
Let this not be the exception to a promise that’s true for everyone else.
11. Luke 15:4-6 (KJV)
“What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it? And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost.”
Prayer: Father, go after the one, the way the shepherd left the ninety-nine, and don’t stop until she’s found.
Let the search not end just because it’s taking longer than I hoped.
12. Deuteronomy 30:2-3 (KJV)
“And shalt return unto the LORD thy God, and shalt obey his voice according to all that I command thee this day, thou and thy children, with all thine heart, and with all thy soul; That then the LORD thy God will turn thy captivity, and have compassion upon thee, and will return and gather thee from all the nations, whither the LORD thy God hath scattered thee.”
Prayer: Lord, when she returns to You, restore what these years have cost her, and cost us.
Let the return be real, not just physical.
13. Joel 2:25 (KJV)
“And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you.”
Prayer: Father, restore to us the years this distance has eaten. Give back what’s been lost between us.
Let restoration be specific enough to cover exactly what we’ve missed.
14. James 5:19-20 (KJV)
“Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him; Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.”
Prayer: Lord, if there’s someone able to reach her when I can’t, put that person in her path.
Let me not need to be the one who brings her back, only someone who does.
15. Psalms 27:10 (KJV)
“When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up.”
Prayer: Father, even if she feels forsaken by everyone else right now, let her know You have not let go of her.
Let Your holding be real to her before mine can be.
16. Psalms 34:18 (KJV)
“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”
Prayer: Lord, You are near the brokenhearted. Be near hers tonight, wherever hers actually is.
Let nearness reach her heart specifically, not just her circumstances.
17. Psalms 86:5 (KJV)
“For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.”
Prayer: Father, You are good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love toward all who call on You, including her, whenever she’s ready to call.
Let forgiveness already be standing ready before she even asks.
18. Psalms 121:7-8 (KJV)
“The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.”
Prayer: Lord, keep her going out and her coming in, tonight and every night she’s away from us.
Let this watching-over be constant, not something that lapses when I stop praying.
19. Psalms 126:5-6 (KJV)
“They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.”
Prayer: Father, let these tears I’ve sown turn into a homecoming I get to shout about.
Let the joy on the other side of this be worth what the waiting has cost.
20. Lamentations 3:22-23 (KJV)
“It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”
Prayer: Lord, Your mercies are new every morning. Let today’s mercy include some sign that she’s turning back.
Let Your faithfulness outlast how long this has already taken.
21. Hosea 14:4 (KJV)
“I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him.”
Prayer: Father, You promise to heal wandering hearts and love freely, with anger turned away. Heal hers.
Let her come home to love, not to judgment, whenever that day comes.
22. Proverbs 22:6 (KJV)
“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
Prayer: Lord, I trained her up the way I knew how. Trust that training to hold even now that it doesn’t look like it’s holding.
Let what I planted years ago still be alive somewhere under the surface.
23. Proverbs 23:24-25 (KJV)
“The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him. Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice.”
Prayer: Father, let me get to rejoice over her again, the way this verse describes, and let that day come soon.
Let joy over her be something I get to feel again, not just remember.
24. 2 Chronicles 7:14 (KJV)
“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”
Prayer: Lord, I humble myself and pray for her tonight. Hear from heaven and heal whatever’s broken between us.
Let my own humility in this be part of what You use.
25. Matthew 7:7-8 (KJV)
“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.”
Prayer: Father, I’m asking, I’m seeking, I’m knocking on this specific door. Answer the way You promised You would.
Let persistence in asking not turn into losing hope while I ask.
26. 1 John 5:14-15 (KJV)
“And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.”
Prayer: Lord, her coming home is according to Your will. Let me pray this with confidence, not just hope.
Let confidence in Your will steady me on the nights hope runs thin.
27. Romans 8:28 (KJV)
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
Prayer: Father, work even this, all of it, together for good, for her and for our whole family.
Let me trust this is being worked even on the days it looks like nothing’s moving.
28. Philippians 1:6 (KJV)
“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:”
Prayer: Lord, You began a good work in her once. Finish what You started, however long it takes.
Let me trust the work is still happening even where I can’t see it.
29. Philippians 4:6-7 (KJV)
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
Prayer: Father, I bring this specific worry to You instead of carrying it alone tonight. Guard my heart with peace I can’t manufacture myself.
Let peace reach the exact fear that keeps me up at night.
30. 1 Peter 5:7 (KJV)
“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”
Prayer: Lord, I’m casting this anxiety, all of it, onto You, because You actually care about her more than I do.
Let casting it be a real release, not just a phrase I say and keep carrying anyway.
Conclusion
The father in that story never chased his son down the road when he first left. He let him go, and he waited, and he watched. What he didn’t do was stop believing there’d be a day worth running for.
Keep the light on, and keep praying by name, even on the nights it feels like nothing’s changing.
If it’s a son you’re praying this over instead, a prayer for a rebellious teenager covers similar ground, and the story behind all of this is worth reading in full: the Parable of the Prodigal Son.
