30 Prayer for Surrender to God With Scriptures to Back

In the garden, hours before the cross, Jesus prayed the hardest version of surrender anyone has ever prayed: “Not my will, but yours be done.” He asked honestly for another way first. Then He surrendered anyway, fully, before anything had actually changed.

These thirty verses are for that same kind of surrender, letting go of your own plans and preferences, trusting God’s direction over your own. For surrender specifically to God’s direction for your life, a prayer for God’s will in my life goes further into that.

Pray these honestly, naming what’s actually hard to release before asking for the strength to release it.

Prayer for Surrender to God

1. Luke 22:42 (KJV)

“Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.”

Prayer: Not my will, but Yours be done.

Let this surrender be genuine, not just words said under pressure.

2. Matthew 26:39 (KJV)

“And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.”

Prayer: If it’s possible, let this cup pass from me, yet not as I will, but as You will.

Let honesty and surrender hold together, the way they did for You.

3. Romans 12:1 (KJV)

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.”

Prayer: Let me offer my body as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to You.

Let this offering be real, not just symbolic.

4. Galatians 2:20 (KJV)

“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”

Prayer: I have been crucified with Christ, and it’s no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.

Let this truth become more real to me, not just something I recite.

5. Psalms 37:5 (KJV)

“Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.”

Prayer: Let me commit my way to You, trusting You to act.

Let trust replace my own striving to control the outcome.

6. Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV)

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

Prayer: Let me trust in You with all my heart, not leaning on my own understanding.

Let You make my path straight, even where I can’t see it yet.

7. James 4:7 (KJV)

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

Prayer: Let me submit to You, resist the devil, and watch him flee.

Let submission to You be my first move, not my last resort.

8. James 4:10 (KJV)

“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.”

Prayer: Let me humble myself before You, and let You lift me up.

Let humility come first, trusting the lifting up will follow.

9. 1 Peter 5:6 (KJV)

“Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:”

Prayer: Let me humble myself under Your mighty hand, so You may lift me up in due time.

Let me trust Your timing more than my own urgency.

10. Matthew 16:24-25 (KJV)

“Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.”

Prayer: Let me deny myself, take up my cross, and follow You.

Let losing my own way of doing things lead me to real life.

11. Luke 9:23 (KJV)

“And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.”

Prayer: Let me deny myself, take up my cross daily, and follow You.

Let this be a daily choice, not a one-time decision I never revisit.

12. Philippians 2:8 (KJV)

“And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.”

Prayer: You humbled Yourself and became obedient to death, even death on a cross.

Let this humility be the model for whatever surrender is asking of me.

13. Psalms 40:8 (KJV)

“I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.”

Prayer: Let me delight to do Your will, with Your law written on my heart.

Let obedience become delight, not just obligation.

14. Psalms 143:10 (KJV)

“Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness.”

Prayer: Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God, let Your good Spirit lead me on level ground.

Let Your leading be clearer than my own instincts right now.

15. Job 1:21 (KJV)

“And said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.”

Prayer: The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away, may Your name be blessed either way.

Let my praise hold steady, even through real loss.

16. Job 42:2-3 (KJV)

“I know that thou canst do every thing, and that no thought can be withholden from thee. Who is he that hideth counsel without knowledge? therefore have I uttered that I understood not; things too wonderful for me, which I knew not.”

Prayer: I know that You can do all things, and no plan of Yours can be thwarted.

Let this settle any need I feel to control the outcome myself.

17. 2 Corinthians 12:9 (KJV)

“And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

Prayer: Your grace is sufficient for me, Your power made perfect in weakness.

Let weakness be where surrender actually makes room for Your power.

18. Isaiah 64:8 (KJV)

“But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.”

Prayer: You are the potter, I am the clay, shape me the way You see fit.

Let me stay soft and workable, not resistant to Your shaping.

19. Jeremiah 18:6 (KJV)

“O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.”

Prayer: Let me be like clay in Your hand, willing to be reshaped.

Let me not harden against the changes You’re making in me.

20. Psalms 46:10 (KJV)

“Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.”

Prayer: Let me be still, and know that You are God.

Let stillness be my surrender, not just gritted-teeth acceptance.

21. Isaiah 26:3 (KJV)

“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.”

Prayer: Keep me in perfect peace, my mind stayed on You.

Let surrender lead to peace, not just resignation.

22. Philippians 4:11-13 (KJV)

“Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”

Prayer: Let me learn to be content whatever the circumstances, doing this through Christ who strengthens me.

Let contentment be genuine, not forced positivity.

23. Ecclesiastes 3:14 (KJV)

“I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him.”

Prayer: Whatever You do endures forever, nothing can be added or subtracted from it.

Let me trust Your plan is complete, without needing to add my own edits.

24. Habakkuk 3:17-19 (KJV)

“Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation. The LORD God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds’ feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places. To the chief singer on my stringed instruments.”

Prayer: Even if nothing improves, let me still rejoice in You, my strength.

Let surrender hold, even when circumstances don’t change.

25. Psalms 27:14 (KJV)

“Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.”

Prayer: Let me wait for You, be strong, and take heart.

Let waiting itself be a form of surrender, not wasted time.

26. Colossians 3:23 (KJV)

“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;”

Prayer: Whatever I do, let me work at it with all my heart, as for You.

Let surrender show up in ordinary tasks, not just big decisions.

27. 1 John 5:14 (KJV)

“And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:”

Prayer: Let me approach You with confidence, that if I ask anything according to Your will, You hear me.

Let my requests align more and more with what You actually want.

28. John 6:38 (KJV)

“For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.”

Prayer: You came down from heaven not to do Your own will, but the will of the One who sent You.

Let this same posture shape how I approach my own will.

29. John 5:30 (KJV)

“I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.”

Prayer: Let me seek not to please myself, but the One who sent me.

Let this be my honest goal, even when it’s hard.

30. Numbers 6:24-26 (KJV)

“The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.”

Prayer: Bless me and keep me, make Your face shine on me, and give me peace as I surrender this to You.

Let this old blessing cover me through whatever surrender requires.

Conclusion

Jesus didn’t skip the honest part of that prayer to get to the surrendered part faster. He asked plainly for another way first, and only then said, not my will, but Yours. Real surrender usually goes through honesty, not around it.

Name specifically what you’re struggling to surrender today, out loud, before asking for the strength to actually let it go.

For releasing something you’ve been holding onto for a long time, a prayer for letting go is worth praying alongside this one.
