John saw a vision of the dead who die in the Lord and heard a voice from heaven say, “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord… they will rest from their labor.” Rest, not absence, is how Scripture describes what comes after, an end to striving, not an end to existing.
These thirty verses are for praying over someone who has passed, that their soul has found exactly that kind of rest.
Pray these at the graveside, in the days after, or any time their memory comes back to you unexpectedly.
Prayer for the Soul to Rest in Peace
1. Revelation 14:13 (KJV)
“And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.”
Prayer: Lord, let them rest from their labors now, blessed, exactly as You promised those who die in You.
Let rest be full and complete, nothing left unfinished that troubles them.
2. 2 Corinthians 5:8 (KJV)
“We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.”
Prayer: They are away from the body and at home with You now. Let home be exactly what it sounds like for them.
Let me picture them at home with You, not simply gone.
3. Philippians 1:23 (KJV)
“For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:”
Prayer: To depart and be with Christ is better by far, Paul wrote. Let that truth comfort me even as I miss them.
Let better by far be something I can eventually believe, not just recite.
4. Isaiah 57:1-2 (KJV)
“The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart: and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come. He shall enter into peace: they shall rest in their beds, each one walking in his uprightness.”
Prayer: Let me trust they have entered into peace, resting now, even where their death made no sense to me.
Let their peace be something I can be glad about, not just grieve.
5. John 11:25-26 (KJV)
“Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?”
Prayer: You are the resurrection and the life. Let that truth outlast whatever finality this death feels like.
Let this promise be bigger than what I currently understand.
6. Psalms 116:15 (KJV)
“Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.”
Prayer: Their death was precious in Your sight, Lord, not just an ending. Let me see it the way You do.
Let precious be a word I can eventually attach to this loss.
7. Ecclesiastes 12:7 (KJV)
“Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.”
Prayer: Their spirit has returned to You who gave it. Receive them fully, the way this verse describes.
Let return mean welcome, not just departure.
8. Luke 23:43 (KJV)
“And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.”
Prayer: You told the thief on the cross, today you will be with me in paradise. Let that same promise be true for them.
Let paradise be real and immediate, not distant or uncertain.
9. Job 3:17 (KJV)
“There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary be at rest.”
Prayer: There the weary are at rest, this verse says. Let them finally be at rest from whatever wearied them here.
Let whatever they struggled with in this life have no hold on them now.
10. Psalms 23:4 (KJV)
“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.”
Prayer: They walked through the valley of the shadow of death, and You were with them, all the way through.
Let me trust they were never alone in that final passage.
11. Revelation 21:4 (KJV)
“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”
Prayer: You wipe every tear from their eyes now, there is no more death, no more mourning, no more pain for them.
Let that promise be fully true for them, even while I still carry the grief.
12. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 (KJV)
“But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.”
Prayer: Let me grieve, but not like someone with no hope, trusting You brought them with You.
Let grief and hope hold together, not cancel each other out.
13. Romans 14:8 (KJV)
“For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord’s.”
Prayer: Whether we live or die, we belong to You. Let that be true for them now, fully and completely.
Let belonging to You be the steadiest truth in all of this.
14. 1 Corinthians 15:54-55 (KJV)
“So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?”
Prayer: Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your sting? Let victory be the last word here, not loss.
Let me hold onto victory even while the sting still feels sharp to me.
15. Philippians 1:21 (KJV)
“For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”
Prayer: For them, to live was Christ, and to die was gain. Let me believe that on their behalf today.
Let this truth about them bring me comfort, even while I miss them.
16. Hebrews 4:9-10 (KJV)
“There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.”
Prayer: There remains a Sabbath rest for Your people. Let them have entered that rest now, resting from their work as You rest from Yours.
Let this rest be complete, nothing left to strive for anymore.
17. Matthew 25:21 (KJV)
“His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.”
Prayer: Let them have heard You say, well done, good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of your Master.
Let their life’s faithfulness be met with exactly that welcome.
18. 2 Timothy 4:7-8 (KJV)
“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.”
Prayer: Let them have fought the good fight, finished the race, kept the faith, and received the crown that awaits.
Let their life be remembered as finished well, not cut short in the ways that matter most.
19. Psalms 121:8 (KJV)
“The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.”
Prayer: You watch over our coming and going, both now and forevermore, including this final going.
Let Your watching have covered them all the way through.
20. Isaiah 25:8 (KJV)
“He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the LORD hath spoken it.”
Prayer: You will swallow up death forever. I’m holding onto that forever, even on a day that feels final.
Let forever feel like a promise, not just a word said at funerals.
21. Psalms 73:24 (KJV)
“Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.”
Prayer: You guided them with Your counsel, and afterward received them into glory. Let that reception have been full and complete.
Let glory be exactly what it sounds like, not a vague comfort phrase.
22. John 14:1-3 (KJV)
“Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.”
Prayer: You went to prepare a place, and they are there now. Let that place be real to me, not just poetic.
Let me picture them somewhere real, prepared specifically for them.
23. 1 John 3:2 (KJV)
“Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.”
Prayer: When He appears, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. Let that be true for them now.
Let this transformation already be complete for them.
24. Numbers 23:10 (KJV)
“Who can count the dust of Jacob, and the number of the fourth part of Israel? Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like his!”
Prayer: Let me die the death of the righteous, Balaam said, and let my final end be like theirs.
Let their end be remembered as righteous, whatever the middle of their story held.
25. Psalms 17:15 (KJV)
“As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.”
Prayer: Let them be satisfied, waking in Your likeness, seeing You face to face.
Let satisfaction be complete, nothing left wanting.
26. Romans 8:38-39 (KJV)
“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Prayer: Nothing, not even death, separates them from Your love, or me from Yours.
Let this certainty hold steady for both of us.
27. 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 (KJV)
“For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.”
Prayer: Their light and momentary troubles have achieved an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.
Let their whole life be seen now in that eternal light, not just its hardest chapters.
28. Psalms 4:8 (KJV)
“I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.”
Prayer: Let them lie down and sleep in perfect peace now, the peace only You can give.
Let their rest be as complete as this verse describes.
29. Revelation 7:17 (KJV)
“For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.”
Prayer: You lead them to springs of living water, and wipe away every tear from their eyes.
Let this be their reality now, fully and completely.
30. 1 Corinthians 15:20 (KJV)
“But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.”
Prayer: Christ has been raised as the firstfruits, the guarantee of what’s ahead for everyone who belongs to Him.
Let their resurrection hope be as certain as this promise makes it.
Conclusion
Rest, not absence, is the word Scripture keeps reaching for. Not gone, but resting, from labor, from grief, from everything this life demanded of them.
Say these when their memory comes back unexpectedly, not just once at the funeral.
For your own grief in the middle of praying for their rest, a prayer for death of a loved one is written for exactly that side of it.
