30 Thanksgiving Prayer for Family With Scriptures to Back

Jesus healed ten men with leprosy in one afternoon. Only one came back to say thank you. Luke made a point of recording that detail, gratitude was never assumed, even by the One doing the healing, it was noticed when it was missing and celebrated when it showed up.

These thirty verses are for the table, the gathered family, the meal that represents an entire year’s worth of who God has carried you through it with.

Pray these before the food gets cold, out loud, together.

Thanksgiving Prayer for Family

1. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (KJV)

“Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”

Prayer: Father, let me rejoice always and give thanks in every circumstance this table represents, the easy years and the hard ones.

Let gratitude cover this whole year, not just the good parts of it.

2. Psalms 107:1 (KJV)

“O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.”

Prayer: Give thanks to You, Lord, for You are good, and Your love endures far longer than this one meal.

Let thanks today reach all the way back to what You’ve carried us through.

3. Psalms 100:4-5 (KJV)

“Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.”

Prayer: Let us enter this day with thanksgiving, into Your courts with praise, giving thanks and blessing Your name.

Let thanksgiving be the actual door we walk through today, not an afterthought.

4. Colossians 3:15 (KJV)

“And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.”

Prayer: Let the peace of Christ rule in this house today, and let us be thankful, even amid whatever family tension shows up.

Let peace win over whatever old friction tries to surface at the table.

5. Psalms 136:1 (KJV)

“O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.”

Prayer: Give thanks to You, Lord, for You are good, Your love endures forever, over every person gathered here.

Let forever cover the family members we’re missing at the table this year too.

6. Ephesians 5:20 (KJV)

“Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;”

Prayer: Let us give thanks always for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Let thanks reach even the parts of this year we wouldn’t have chosen.

7. Philippians 4:6 (KJV)

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”

Prayer: Lord, with thanksgiving, we bring You our requests for this family too, not just our gratitude.

Let asking and thanking sit together at this table today.

8. Psalms 118:24 (KJV)

“This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.”

Prayer: This is the day You have made. Let us rejoice and be genuinely glad in it, together.

Let gladness be real today, not performed for the family photo.

9. 1 Chronicles 16:34 (KJV)

“O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.”

Prayer: Give thanks to You, Lord, for You are good, Your love endures forever, over this exact table.

Let this old song of thanks feel brand new around us today.

10. James 1:17 (KJV)

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”

Prayer: Every good and perfect gift is from You, including every person sitting at this table.

Let us see each face here as a gift, not something owed to us.

11. Psalms 127:3 (KJV)

“Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.”

Prayer: Children are a heritage from You. Thank You for every child, grandchild, and niece or nephew at this table.

Let their laughter today be a gift we actually notice.

12. Joshua 24:15 (KJV)

“And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

Prayer: As for me and this house, let us serve You, Lord, today and every day after this one.

Let this declaration mean something beyond just this one meal.

13. Psalms 133:1 (KJV)

“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!”

Prayer: How good and pleasant it is when family dwells together in unity. Let that be true here today.

Let unity hold even through whatever disagreements might come up over dessert.

14. Proverbs 17:6 (KJV)

“Children’s children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.”

Prayer: Grandchildren are the crown of the aged. Thank You for every grandparent still here to wear that crown today.

Let us treasure the older generation at this table while we still have them here.

15. Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (KJV)

“And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.”

Prayer: Let Your words stay on our hearts today, and let us actually pass them to the children watching us.

Let this holiday teach faith, not just tradition.

16. Psalms 128:1-3 (KJV)

“Blessed is every one that feareth the LORD; that walketh in his ways. For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee. Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table.”

Prayer: Bless everyone at this table who fears You, and let our home reflect the blessing this psalm describes.

Let blessing be visible in how we actually treat each other today.

17. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 (KJV)

“Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.”

Prayer: Thank You that two are better than one, that we have each other to lean on when one of us falls.

Let this family keep being a place people can fall safely.

18. Ruth 1:16 (KJV)

“And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God:”

Prayer: Let us love each other the way Ruth loved Naomi, where you go, I will go, even into hard seasons.

Let loyalty in this family run that deep, not just on holidays.

19. Psalms 34:8 (KJV)

“O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.”

Prayer: Let us taste and see that You are good, right here in this meal, in this gathering.

Let today be evidence of Your goodness we can actually point to.

20. 2 Corinthians 9:15 (KJV)

“Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.”

Prayer: Thanks be to You for Your indescribable gift, the one this whole holiday points back to.

Let gratitude for You outlast gratitude for just the meal.

21. Psalms 92:1 (KJV)

“IT IS A GOOD THING TO GIVE THANKS UNTO THE LORD, AND TO SING PRAISES UNTO THY NAME, O MOST HIGH:”

Prayer: It is good to give thanks to You, Lord, and we’re doing that today, out loud, together.

Let saying thanks out loud become something this family keeps doing, not just today.

22. Psalms 103:1-2 (KJV)

“Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:”

Prayer: Let my whole being bless You, Lord, and let me not forget a single benefit this year has held.

Let memory of Your goodness stay sharp long after today ends.

23. Luke 17:15-16 (KJV)

“And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan.”

Prayer: Let me be the one who comes back to say thank you, not one of the nine who kept walking.

Let gratitude actually make it back to You, not just stay unspoken in my head.

24. Colossians 3:17 (KJV)

“And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.”

Prayer: Whatever we do today, cooking, cleaning up, arguing about the game, let it be done in Your name, with thanks.

Let even the ordinary parts of today carry gratitude.

25. Psalms 105:1 (KJV)

“O give thanks unto the LORD; call upon his name: make known his deeds among the people.”

Prayer: Give thanks to You, Lord, call on Your name, make Your deeds known among this family gathered here.

Let this family actually hear about what You’ve done this year, not just eat in silence about it.

26. Deuteronomy 8:10 (KJV)

“When thou hast eaten and art full, then thou shalt bless the LORD thy God for the good land which he hath given thee.”

Prayer: When we’ve eaten and are satisfied, let us praise You for this good meal and this good land.

Let fullness lead to praise, not just to a nap on the couch.

27. Psalms 145:4 (KJV)

“One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts.”

Prayer: Let one generation commend Your works to the next, right at this table, today.

Let the kids here grow up remembering this family actually talked about You.

28. Proverbs 15:17 (KJV)

“Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith.”

Prayer: Better a simple meal with love than a feast with strife. Let love be what’s actually remembered from today.

Let love outshine whatever’s imperfect about this year’s version of the meal.

29. 3 John 1:4 (KJV)

“I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.”

Prayer: There’s no greater joy than knowing my children, and this whole family, are walking in truth.

Let that joy be what I actually carry away from today.

30. Psalms 145:9 (KJV)

“The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works.”

Prayer: You are good to all, and Your compassion is over everything You have made, including every person at this table.

Let Your compassion be the thing we all leave here having felt.

Conclusion

Nine walked away and never looked back. One turned around. The whole difference between them was a few seconds of actually saying it out loud.

Say grace a little slower this year, and let someone at the table who’s never prayed out loud before go first if they want to.

For the family members who couldn’t make it to the table this year, a prayer for grief and comfort and a prayer for grief and loneliness are worth praying quietly too.
