30 Prayer for Scared at Night With Scriptures to Back

David wrote Psalm 3 while fleeing his own son, who wanted him dead. “I lie down and sleep,” he wrote, from that exact terror, “I wake again, because the Lord sustains me. I will not fear though tens of thousands assail me on every side.” He wasn’t pretending the threat wasn’t real. He just wasn’t facing it alone.

These thirty verses are for genuine fear at night, whatever’s causing it, prayed honestly rather than dismissed. For protection over the wider household through the night, a night prayer for protection is worth praying alongside this one.

Pray these slowly, right where the fear actually is, not around it.

Prayer for Scared at Night

1. Psalms 3:5-6 (KJV)

“I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the LORD sustained me. I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have set themselves against me round about.”

Prayer: Let me lie down and sleep, and wake again, because You sustain me, even surrounded by real fear.

Let this fear not be the final word tonight.

2. Psalms 4:8 (KJV)

“I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.”

Prayer: Let me lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone make me dwell in safety.

Let peace be stronger than the fear I’m carrying right now.

3. Proverbs 3:24 (KJV)

“When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.”

Prayer: When I lie down, let me not be afraid, let my sleep be sweet.

Let fear lose its grip enough that I can actually rest.

4. Psalms 91:5 (KJV)

“Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;”

Prayer: Let me not fear the terror of night.

Let this specific fear be named and met with Your protection.

5. Psalms 27:1 (KJV)

“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”

Prayer: You are my light and salvation, whom shall I fear.

Let fear lose its grip on me tonight.

6. Psalms 34:4 (KJV)

“I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.”

Prayer: I sought You, and You answered me, You delivered me from all my fears.

Let fear lose its grip the way it did for the psalmist.

7. Psalms 56:3-4 (KJV)

“What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.”

Prayer: When I am afraid, let me put my trust in You.

Let trust be my honest answer to this fear, not pretending it isn’t there.

8. Isaiah 41:10 (KJV)

“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”

Prayer: Don’t let me be dismayed, You are my God, You will strengthen and help me.

Let help arrive before this fear grows any bigger.

9. 2 Timothy 1:7 (KJV)

Prayer: You gave me a spirit not of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.

Let a sound mind replace this racing fear tonight.

10. Psalms 121:3-4 (KJV)

Let Your watching cover every hour I’m afraid tonight.

11. Psalms 121:7-8 (KJV)

“The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.”

Prayer: Keep me from all harm, watch over my life, now and forevermore.

Let this watching be real, not just words.

12. Psalms 34:7 (KJV)

Prayer: Your angel encamps around those who fear You, and delivers them.

Let that circle of protection hold strong tonight.

13. Psalms 91:1-2 (KJV)

“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.”

Let this shelter feel real, not just theoretical.

14. Psalms 46:1-2 (KJV)

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;”

Let stability come from You when everything else feels shaky.

15. 1 John 4:18 (KJV)

“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.”

Let love, not fear, be what I fall asleep in.

16. Isaiah 43:1-2 (KJV)

“But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine. When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.”

Prayer: Let me not fear, You have redeemed me, called me by name, I am Yours.

Let being known by name matter more than this fear tonight.

17. Deuteronomy 31:6 (KJV)

“Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.”

Let courage show up before the fear fully clears.

18. Joshua 1:9 (KJV)

“Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”

Let this command steady me right now.

19. Psalms 118:6 (KJV)

20. Mark 4:39-40 (KJV)

“And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?”

Let this same calming presence meet me tonight.

21. Psalms 23:4 (KJV)

Let Your presence be as real in this fear as anywhere else.

22. Psalms 139:11-12 (KJV)

“If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.”

Prayer: Even the darkness is not dark to You, the night shines like the day.

Let me trust You see clearly what I can’t see at all right now.

23. Psalms 17:8 (KJV)

Prayer: Bless me and keep me, make Your face shine on me, and give me peace tonight.

Let this old blessing settle over me as I fall asleep.

Conclusion

David wasn’t writing that psalm from theoretical safety. His own son was actively hunting him. And yet he described real, actual sleep, because the fear, real as it was, wasn’t the only thing present in that tent. There was something steadier underneath it.

Name your fear specifically tonight, out loud if you can, rather than letting it stay vague and shapeless.

For racing, anxious thoughts more broadly, a prayer for sleep and anxiety is worth praying alongside this one.
