30 Prayer for a Loved One With Scriptures to Back

Paul had never even met most of the Colossians in person, yet he wrote that he hadn’t stopped praying for them, asking specifically for wisdom, understanding, strength, and a life that actually reflected who they were becoming. It’s a remarkably full prayer for people he mostly knew secondhand.

These thirty verses are for someone you love directly, prayed with that same range, not narrowed to just one need. For their physical safety specifically, a prayer for the safety of a loved one goes deeper into that particular request.

Pray these by their name, across their whole life, not just the one thing currently worrying you about them.

Prayer for a Loved One

1. Colossians 1:9-10 (KJV)

“For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;”

Prayer: Fill them with knowledge of Your will, so they may live a life worthy of You, bearing fruit.

Let their whole life reflect a clarity I can’t give them myself.

2. Colossians 1:11-12 (KJV)

“Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness; Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:”

Prayer: Strengthen them with all power for great endurance and patience, and joyful thanksgiving.

Let joy accompany their endurance, not just grim persistence.

3. Philippians 1:3-6 (KJV)

“I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy, For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now; Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:”

Prayer: I thank You every time I remember them, confident You who began a good work will carry it on.

Let this confidence hold, even through their harder seasons.

4. Philippians 1:9-11 (KJV)

“And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment; That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ; Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.”

Prayer: Let their love abound more and more in knowledge and insight, so they can discern what’s best.

Let discernment guide their decisions, not just good intentions.

5. Ephesians 1:17-19 (KJV)

“That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,”

Prayer: Give them the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so they may know You better.

Let their heart’s eyes be enlightened, not just their mind.

6. Ephesians 3:16-19 (KJV)

“That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.”

Prayer: Strengthen them with power through Your Spirit, and let Christ dwell in their heart, rooted in love.

Let this rootedness hold them steady through anything.

7. 3 John 1:2 (KJV)

Let this shelter feel real to them, not just to me praying it.

Prayer: Let them bring their concerns to You, and let peace guard their heart and mind.

Let peace reach exactly whatever they’re carrying right now.

Conclusion

Paul’s prayer for the Colossians wasn’t narrow. He prayed for their whole life, wisdom, endurance, joy, purpose, all in one breath. That’s a good pattern to follow praying for someone you love too, rather than narrowing it down to just their most obvious need right now.

Pray this over them by name today, and let them know afterward that you did.

For a shorter version to send them directly, a short prayer for someone special is worth sharing alongside this one.
