The tax collector in Jesus’ parable didn’t even lift his eyes to heaven. He just beat his chest and said one line, “God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” Jesus said that man, not the confident, well-credentialed Pharisee praying beside him, went home justified.
These thirty verses are for that same honest, unadorned request, mercy asked for plainly, without padding it out with reasons You should grant it.
Pray these the way that tax collector did, without polishing yourself up first.
Prayer for Mercy
1. Luke 18:13 (KJV)
“And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.”
Prayer: God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
Let this simple honesty be enough, the way it was enough for him.
2. Psalms 51:1 (KJV)
“Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.”
Prayer: Have mercy on me, according to Your unfailing love, blot out my transgressions.
Let Your love, not my performance, be the basis for this mercy.
3. Psalms 51:2 (KJV)
“Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.”
Prayer: Wash away all my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
Let this cleansing be thorough, not partial.
4. Micah 6:8 (KJV)
“He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?”
Prayer: Let me act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with You.
Let receiving mercy make me quicker to extend it too.
5. Lamentations 3:22-23 (KJV)
“It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”
Prayer: Your mercies never end, they are new every morning, great is Your faithfulness.
Let today’s mercy be fresh, not a leftover from yesterday.
6. Hebrews 4:16 (KJV)
“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”
Prayer: Let me approach Your throne of grace with confidence, to receive mercy and find grace to help.
Let confidence come from Your invitation, not my own worthiness.
7. Ephesians 2:4-5 (KJV)
“But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)”
Prayer: Because of Your great love, You who are rich in mercy made me alive with Christ.
Let this mercy be the reason I’m even able to pray right now.
8. Titus 3:5 (KJV)
“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;”
Prayer: You saved me, not because of righteous things I had done, but because of Your mercy.
Let me stop trying to earn what was always a gift.
9. Psalms 103:8 (KJV)
“The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.”
Prayer: You are compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.
Let me trust this character of Yours, especially right now.
10. Psalms 103:10-12 (KJV)
“He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.”
Prayer: Don’t treat me as my sins deserve, but remove them from me as far as the east is from the west.
Let this distance be real, not something I keep pulling back into view.
11. Psalms 86:5 (KJV)
“For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.”
Prayer: You are good and forgiving, abounding in love to all who call on You.
Let calling on You be enough, without needing to earn a hearing first.
12. Psalms 130:3-4 (KJV)
“If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand? But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.”
Prayer: If You kept a record of sins, who could stand? But with You there is forgiveness.
Let forgiveness, not a running tally, be what defines this relationship.
13. Joel 2:13 (KJV)
“And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.”
Prayer: You are gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, and You relent from sending calamity.
Let this mercy actually change the outcome I’m facing.
14. Jonah 4:2 (KJV)
“And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.”
Prayer: You are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love.
Let me stop resenting this mercy and just receive it.
15. Exodus 34:6-7 (KJV)
“And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.”
Prayer: You are compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.
Let this old, foundational description of You still hold true for me.
16. Nehemiah 9:17 (KJV)
“And refused to obey, neither were mindful of thy wonders that thou didst among them; but hardened their necks, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage: but thou art a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and forsookest them not.”
Prayer: You are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love.
Let this be true for me even after repeated failure.
17. James 2:13 (KJV)

Prayer: Mercy triumphs over judgment. Let that be true in my life right now.
Let mercy have the last word over whatever I’m afraid I deserve.

Let receiving mercy make me a genuinely more merciful person too.
19. Romans 9:15-16 (KJV)
“For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.”
Prayer: You have mercy on whom You have mercy, it doesn’t depend on human effort but on You.
Let me rest in this, rather than trying to earn it through effort.
20. Isaiah 55:7 (KJV)
“Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.”
Prayer: Let me forsake my own way and return to You, for You will freely pardon.
Let this pardon be as free as You’ve promised it, not conditional.
21. Daniel 9:9 (KJV)
“To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses, though we have rebelled against him;”
Prayer: To You belong mercy and forgiveness, even though I have rebelled against You.
Let rebellion not disqualify me from this mercy.
22. Psalms 25:6-7 (KJV)
“Remember, O LORD, thy tender mercies and thy lovingkindnesses; for they have been ever of old. Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions: according to thy mercy remember thou me for thy goodness’ sake, O LORD.”
Prayer: Remember Your great mercy and love, but don’t remember the sins of my youth.
Let Your mercy be what You remember, not my worst mistakes.
23. Psalms 6:2 (KJV)
“Have mercy upon me, O LORD; for I am weak: O LORD, heal me; for my bones are vexed.”
Prayer: Be merciful to me, for I am faint, heal me.
Let mercy reach me exactly where I’m running out of strength.
24. Psalms 41:4 (KJV)
“I said, LORD, be merciful unto me: heal my soul; for I have sinned against thee.”
Prayer: Be merciful to me, heal me, for I have sinned against You.
Let honesty about my sin be met with mercy, not condemnation.
25. Numbers 14:18-19 (KJV)
“The LORD is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation. Pardon, I beseech thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of thy mercy, and as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.”
Prayer: You are slow to anger and abounding in love, forgiving sin. Pardon me in accordance with Your great love.
Let the scale of Your love match the scale of what I need forgiven.
26. Habakkuk 3:2 (KJV)
“O LORD, I have heard thy speech, and was afraid: O LORD, revive thy work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make known; in wrath remember mercy.”

Let mercy be what I actually receive, even when I deserve correction.

30. Numbers 6:24-26 (KJV)
“The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.”
Prayer: Bless me and keep me, make Your face shine on me, and give me peace and mercy.
Let this old blessing include the mercy I need most today.
Conclusion
Jesus didn’t say the tax collector’s prayer worked because it was eloquent. It worked because it was honest, no résumé of good deeds attached, just a plain, humble request. That’s still the kind of prayer mercy actually responds to.
Pray this one without editing yourself first, the way that tax collector didn’t.
For forgiveness alongside this mercy, a prayer for forgiveness and mercy and a prayer for forgiveness are both worth praying together with this one.
