Paul laid out an odd chain of cause and effect: suffering produces perseverance, perseverance produces character, and character produces hope. Not the order most people would choose, but he insisted hope is what eventually comes out the other side of hard seasons, not something that skips past them.
These thirty verses are for whatever season currently has you low on both, worn out and unsure there’s anything good ahead.
Pray these even on the days hope feels like a stretch. That’s exactly what it’s for.
Prayer for Strength and Hope
1. Romans 5:3-5 (KJV)
“And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”
Prayer: Let this hard season produce perseverance, character, and finally hope, the way You promise it can.
Let me trust this process even while I’m still in the hard part of it.
2. Romans 15:13 (KJV)
“Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.”
Prayer: God of hope, fill me with joy and peace as I trust You, so I overflow with hope by the Spirit’s power.
Let hope be the overflow, not something I have to manufacture myself.
3. Isaiah 40:31 (KJV)
“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”
Prayer: Let me hope in You and renew my strength, soaring like an eagle instead of dragging through today.
Let renewal come exactly when the old strength runs out.
4. Jeremiah 29:11 (KJV)
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”
Prayer: You know the plans You have for me, plans to give me hope and a future.
Let me trust that future even before I can see any evidence of it.
5. Hebrews 6:19 (KJV)
“Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;”
Prayer: Let this hope be an anchor for my soul, firm and secure, not something that shifts with my mood.
Let hope hold steady even when my feelings don’t.
6. Psalms 42:11 (KJV)
“Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.”
Prayer: Why am I downcast, why so disturbed within me? Let me put my hope in You, even while I ask honestly.
Let honesty come before I try to talk myself into feeling better.
7. Lamentations 3:21-24 (KJV)
“This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.”
Prayer: This I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: Your love never ends, Your mercies never fail.
Let remembering this be enough to shift my whole outlook today.
8. Psalms 71:14 (KJV)
“But I will hope continually, and will yet praise thee more and more.”
Prayer: Let me always have hope, praising You more and more, even through this hard stretch.
Let praise grow, not shrink, the longer this season lasts.
9. Romans 8:24-25 (KJV)
“For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.”
Prayer: Let me wait for what I hope for patiently, trusting it’s real even though I can’t see it yet.
Let patience here be possible, not just demanded.
10. 1 Peter 1:3 (KJV)
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,”
Prayer: You have given me new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Christ.
Let this hope be alive, not just a nice idea I hold at arm’s length.
11. Psalms 62:5 (KJV)
“My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.”
Prayer: Find rest, O my soul, in God alone, for my hope comes from Him.
Let this be a command I give myself, not just a nice sentiment.
12. Psalms 130:5 (KJV)
“I wait for the LORD, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope.”
Prayer: I wait for You, my whole being waits, and in Your word I put my hope.
Let waiting not feel wasted, even when it’s slow.
13. Psalms 39:7 (KJV)
“And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee.”
Prayer: Now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in You.
Let this be true even when nothing else looks certain.
14. Titus 2:13 (KJV)
“Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;”
Prayer: Let me wait for that blessed hope, the appearing of Your glory, even while I’m still in this hard season.
Let a future hope give me real strength for the present one.
15. Colossians 1:27 (KJV)
“To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:”
Prayer: Christ in me is the hope of glory. Let that indwelling hope be real, not distant.
Let hope live in me, not just circle around me.
16. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 (KJV)
“For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.”
Prayer: Let me not lose heart, even though outwardly I’m wasting away, let me be renewed inwardly day by day.
Let renewal happen even when nothing visible has changed yet.
17. Habakkuk 3:17-19 (KJV)
“Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation. The LORD God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds’ feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places. To the chief singer on my stringed instruments.”
Prayer: Though nothing is producing right now, let me still rejoice in You, my Savior and my strength.
Let joy be possible even when circumstances give me no reason for it.
18. Psalms 27:13-14 (KJV)
“I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.”
Prayer: I will still see Your goodness. Let me wait for You, and let my heart take courage.
Let courage come slowly if it has to, but let it come.
19. Isaiah 40:29 (KJV)
“He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.”
Prayer: You give strength to the weary. I’m weary, meet me exactly there.
Let strength arrive right when the old kind runs out.
20. Nehemiah 8:10 (KJV)
“Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our LORD: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”
Prayer: Let the joy of the Lord be my strength today, something sturdier than gritted-teeth effort.
Let joy fuel this instead of pure willpower.
21. Psalms 73:26 (KJV)
“My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.”
Prayer: My flesh and my heart may fail, but You are the strength of my heart forever.
Let Your strength stand in exactly where mine gives out.
22. Philippians 4:13 (KJV)

Prayer: Don’t let me be dismayed, You are my God, You will strengthen and help me.
Let strengthening come before I completely run out.
24. 2 Corinthians 12:9 (KJV)
“And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”
Prayer: Your grace is sufficient for me, Your power made perfect in my weakness.
Let my weakness be exactly where Your power shows up clearest.
25. Psalms 46:1 (KJV)

30. Psalms 31:24 (KJV)
“Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD.”
Prayer: Be strong and take heart, all who hope in You. Let that be true for me today.
Let heart and strength arrive together, not one without the other.
Conclusion
Paul never promised the suffering would feel good. He just promised it wasn’t the end of the sentence. Hope was always meant to come after, not instead of, the hard part.
Hold onto these even on the days hope feels far away. That’s not weak faith, that’s exactly what this promise is for.
For the exhaustion underneath this, a prayer for strength and peace pairs well with this one.
