David asked for two things in the very same psalm: “For the sake of your name, Lord, forgive my iniquity, though it is great,” and a few verses later, “Guard my life and rescue me.” Clean up what’s behind me, and protect what’s ahead of me, prayed together, not separately.
These thirty verses are for that same double request, forgiveness for what’s already happened and protection for what’s still coming.
Pray these together, letting neither one crowd out the other.
Prayer for Forgiveness and Protection
1. Psalms 25:11 (KJV)
“For thy name’s sake, O LORD, pardon mine iniquity; for it is great.”
Prayer: For the sake of Your name, forgive my iniquity, though it is great.
Let this forgiveness be as complete as this honest confession needs it to be.
2. Psalms 25:20 (KJV)
“O keep my soul, and deliver me: let me not be ashamed; for I put my trust in thee.”
Prayer: Guard my life and rescue me, let me not be put to shame, for I take refuge in You.
Let protection be as real as the forgiveness I’ve just asked for.
3. Matthew 6:12-13 (KJV)
“And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.”
Prayer: Forgive me my debts, and deliver me from the evil one, exactly as You taught us to pray.
Let both requests be answered in the same breath.
4. 1 John 1:9 (KJV)
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
Prayer: I confess this to You, trusting You are faithful and just to forgive and purify me.
Let confession lead to real freedom, not lingering shame.
5. Psalms 91:1-2 (KJV)
“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.”
Prayer: Let me dwell in Your shelter, my refuge and fortress, the God in whom I trust.
Let dwelling there be constant, not just something I reach for in crisis.
6. Psalms 32:1-2 (KJV)
“Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile.”
Prayer: Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.
Let me actually feel blessed by this, not just informed of it.
7. Psalms 121:7-8 (KJV)
“The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.”
Prayer: Keep me from all harm, watch over my life, my coming and going.
Let watching cover both what’s behind me and what’s ahead.
8. Ephesians 4:32 (KJV)
“And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.”
Prayer: Let me be kind and compassionate, forgiving others just as You forgave me.
Let forgiveness I’ve received become forgiveness I actually give.
9. 2 Thessalonians 3:3 (KJV)
“But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil.”
Prayer: You are faithful, and You will strengthen and protect me from the evil one.
Let both promises hold at the same time, strength and protection together.
10. Colossians 3:13 (KJV)
“Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.”
Prayer: Let me bear with whoever wrongs me, and forgive as You forgave me.
Let grievances not outlast the day they happened.
11. Psalms 34:7 (KJV)
“The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.”
Prayer: Your angel encamps around those who fear You, and delivers them. Encamp around me now.
Let that circle of protection hold today and every day.
12. Isaiah 43:25 (KJV)
“I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.”
Prayer: You blot out my transgressions for Your own sake, and remember my sins no more.
Let forgetting be real, not just a figure of speech.
13. Psalms 5:11-12 (KJV)
“But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee. For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.”
Prayer: Spread Your protection over me, surround me with Your favor as with a shield, and let me rejoice.
Let protection produce real joy, not just relief.
14. Micah 7:18-19 (KJV)
“Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy. He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.”
Prayer: Who is a God like You, who pardons sin and delights to show mercy?
Let me trust You actually delight in forgiving me.
15. Psalms 46:1 (KJV)
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
Prayer: You are my refuge and strength, a very present help in this exact kind of trouble.
Let help feel present, not distant, today.
16. Luke 23:34 (KJV)
“Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.”
Prayer: Father, forgive them, they don’t know what they’re doing. Let me pray that over whoever I need to forgive too.
Let this forgiveness reach even the people who don’t realize what they did.
17. Isaiah 54:17 (KJV)
“No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.”
Prayer: No weapon forged against me will prevail. Let that be true over whatever’s aimed at me.
Let this promise cover threats I can see and the ones I can’t.
18. Psalms 103:12 (KJV)
“As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.”
Prayer: Remove my transgressions from me as far as the east is from the west.
Let this distance be real, not something I keep dragging back.
19. Nahum 1:7 (KJV)
“The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.”
Prayer: You are good, a refuge in times of trouble, You care for those who trust in You.
Let being cared for feel real, not distant, right now.
20. Hebrews 8:12 (KJV)
“For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.”
Prayer: You forgive wickedness and remember sins no more.
Let this be final, not something You keep bringing up.
21. Psalms 121:1-2 (KJV)
“I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.”
Prayer: I lift my eyes to the hills, where does my help come from? My help comes from You.
Let my eyes stay lifted instead of fixed on old failures or new fears.
22. Romans 8:1 (KJV)
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”
Prayer: There is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. Let me actually live like that’s true.
Let freedom from condemnation reach the parts of me still trying to punish myself.
23. Deuteronomy 33:27 (KJV)
“The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.”
Prayer: The eternal God is my refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.
Let those arms hold both my forgiveness and my safety.
24. Psalms 32:7 (KJV)
“Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah.”
Prayer: You are my hiding place, You protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.
Let deliverance come with real joy, not just relief.
25. James 5:15-16 (KJV)
“And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”
Prayer: Let the prayer offered in faith heal and forgive, and let confession bring real healing.
Let honesty be the doorway both forgiveness and healing walk through.
26. Proverbs 18:10 (KJV)
“The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.”
Prayer: Your name is a fortified tower, let me run into it and be safe.
Let running to You be my first move, not my last resort.
27. Psalms 130:3-4 (KJV)
“If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand? But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.”
Prayer: If You kept a record of sins, who could stand? But with You there is forgiveness.
Let reverence for You grow from this forgiveness, not fear of punishment.
28. 2 Corinthians 10:4 (KJV)
“(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)”
Prayer: My weapons have divine power to demolish strongholds, including the ones built by old guilt.
Let this stronghold actually come down, not just weaken temporarily.
29. 1 John 1:7 (KJV)
“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.”
Prayer: The blood of Jesus purifies me from all sin, not just the ones I’m aware of.
Let all mean all, including what I haven’t even named yet.
30. Numbers 6:24-26 (KJV)
“The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.”
Prayer: Bless me and keep me, make Your face shine on me, and give me peace.
Let this old blessing cover both my forgiveness and my safety today.
Conclusion
David never treated these as two separate prayers offered on different days. He asked for both in the same psalm, trusting the same God who wipes the past clean is also the One guarding what’s ahead.
Pray this whenever old guilt and current fear are both weighing on you at once.
For the specific work of extending forgiveness to someone else, a prayer for forgiveness and mercy pairs well with this one.
